Title Tuesday #12: IWGP Intercontinental Championship

Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am your host, the Baumeister.  For many of us, we judge how good a wrestler’s legacy is based on how many titles they have, or haven’t won in their careers.  But, what about the heritage of those titles? That’s where we are going to look at here.  Not just who won the championship, where they won and how long they held it, but also interesting information unique to that championship’s history.

This week’s featured championship: IWGP Intercontinental Championship

  1. MVP: Won May 15, 2011 at NJPW Invastion Tour 2011~Attack on East Coast~Day 3 in Philadelphia, PA, defeating Toru Yano in a tournament final. Held the title for 148 days.
    1. First champion to win the title in the United States.
    2. First gaijin to hold the title.
  2. Masato Tanaka: Won October 10, 2011 at NJPW Destruction 2011 in Tokyo, Japan. Held the title for 125 days.
  3. Hirooki Goto: Won February 12, 2012 at NJPW The New Beginning 2012 in Osaka, Japan. Held the title for 161 days.
  4. Shinsuke Nakamura: Won July 22, 2012 at NJPW 40th Anniversary Tour Kizuna Road-Day 11 in Yamagata, Japan. Held the title for 313 days.
    1. First title defense in SWF vs Oliver John at SWF International Wrestling Wars in Gridley, CA on August 26, 2012.
  5. La Sombra: Won May 31, 2013 at CMLL on Televisa in Mexico City, Mexico. Held the title for 50 days.
    1. First champion to win the title in a foreign promotion.
    2. First title defense in CMLL vs Volador Jr at CMLL on Fox Sports in Mexico City, Mexico on June 28, 2013
  6. Shinsuke Nakamura (2): Won July 20, 2013 at NJPW Kizuna Road 2013-Day 9 in Akita, Japan. Held the title for 168 days.
  7. Hiroshi Tanahashi: Won January 4, 2015 at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 8 in Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. Held the title for 92 days.
  8. Shinsuke Nakamura (3): Won April 6, 2014 at NJPW Invasion Attack 2014 in Tokyo, Japan. Held the title for 76 days.
  9. Bad Luck Fale: Won June 21, 2014 at NJPW Dominion 6.21 in Osaka, Japan. Held the title for 92 days.
  10. Shinsuke Nakamura (4): Won September 21, 2014 at NJPW Destruction in Kobe in Kobe, Japan. Held the title for 224 days.
  11. Hirooki Goto (2): Won May 3, 2015 at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku 2015 in Fukuoka, Japan. Held the title for 147 days.
  12. Shinsuke Nakamura (5): Won September 27, 2015 at NJPW Destruction in Kobe 2015 in Kobe, Japan. Held the title for 120 days.
    1. Vacated the title January 25 ,2016 in order to go to the WWE. Title is vacant for 20 days.
  13. Kenny Omega: Won February 14, 2016 at NJPW The New Beginning in Niigata in Niigata, Japan, defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi. Held the title for 13 days.
